ABOUT

Ben Dahl’s musical life has always been a blend of curiosity, craftsmanship, and creative exploration. Raised in a uniquely musical household—his stepfather a luthier and his mother a Montessori music teacher—Ben was exposed to both the structure and spirit of music from the start.

Though the piano was always nearby, Ben’s early connection to music came through hands-on exploration—studying the mechanics of violins and guitars, learning how sound worked as much as how to play it. When he returned to the piano, it was with the same inquisitive mindset. He didn’t just play it—he studied it. That led him to pursue training and certification as a Registered Piano Technician through the Piano Technicians Guild.

Ben’s deep understanding of piano tuning and voicing shapes how he composes. He uses his technical knowledge to explore alternate temperaments and subtle shifts in resonance, crafting immersive soundscapes that reflect a deep sensitivity to the mechanics of sound.

Ben’s musical path has always leaned toward the exploratory and unconventional. He was a founding member of several experimental rock bands, where he contributed not just as a keyboardist and guitarist, but as a vocalist and songwriter deeply invested in shaping the band’s sonic identity. These projects became a testing ground for blending traditional instrumentation with textural layers, rhythmic complexity, and nonstandard song structures—pushing beyond genre to create something uniquely expressive.

His compositions often blur the lines between structure and spontaneity, drawing on his technical background to explore the physical and tonal possibilities of sound. This distinctive approach has resonated with fellow artists and performers, with his works being performed by a variety of musicians—including the acclaimed Austin-based percussion trio line upon line, known for their boundary-pushing interpretations and commitment to new music.

Ben earned his degree in Composition for Film, Television, and Games from Berklee College of Music, where he refined his voice as both a storyteller and technician of sound. Today, he lives in Houston with his wife and two daughters, where he composes, teaches, and repairs pianos—bridging the gap between musical form and emotional expression, one note at a time.
